Amos, who started at the club on the opening night back in 1993, is a bit of a minor celebrity around the world of bingo and Europe’s biggest bingo hall, with regulars enjoying his infectious nature and sense of fun.
“People will be shouting ‘Dirty Gertie’ at me now they know it’s been 30 years since I first started.” Amos joked. “I won’t be going anywhere soon though as I think I have another thirty years of working with the lovely people at Cricklewood in me yet. I love the people and the customers so much, it’s not even like work.”
When asked about how bingo has changed since he started his career in 1993 he said: “Well we’re no longer able to use the traditional bingo lingo which I think is a bit sad really, it’s taken some of the fun out of the game, but what’s brilliant are the weekend nights when once a month we’re giving away four jackpots worth £10,000 each to someone in the club. You must get here early though as those nights are especially packed!”
Amos was presented with a golden dabber, flowers and a certificate to mark the momentous occasion. Asked about his most memorable occasion as bingo caller he said, “Without doubt the night MERKUR hit the Guinness World Record for the biggest ever bingo game prize raised on a single inhouse game – a massive £100,000. It was great to be part of the night and celebrate with everyone. It’s always extra special when one of our regulars wins a life changing amount of money. Often they’ll be with family and close friends so to see an entire table celebrating together is great.
“It was also fantastic to meet several celebrities during my time here including Barbara Windsor and Stacey Soloman, both of whom were absolutely lovely.”
Steve Ambrose, MERKUR Casino Operations Director, added; “Throughout his three decades with MERKUR Bingo, Amos has demonstrated outstanding professionalism, reliability, and passion for his work. Beyond his professional achievements, Amos is also known for his generous and compassionate nature. Congratulations on this incredible milestone, your unwavering commitment to excellence and for being an inspiration to us all.”
With no day the same and a supportive group of colleagues, Amos is looking forward to many more years of bingo to come.
